About Me…
NEW: A Collection of my Canadian Film & TV Essays...I’ve been writing provocatively on-line since around 1998: about Canadian film/TV, Canadian culture & identity, as well as about comic books and graphic novels. But I also occasionally write fiction, with stories published in Strange Horizons, Daily SF, On Spec, the acclaimed Tesseracts anthology (the 19th volume), and other places over the years. I mention this because I’ve put out a few pulp story collections. And if you enjoy this blog, essays, reviews, and/or any of my websites, one way to show support would be to check out MY FICTION COLLECTIONS and, if they look interesting…buy one! It ain’t PATREON or anything, but it’s a way of showing you think what I’ve been doing is worth doing, and would help keep this blog and the websites up.
End of shameless plug.

So…What’s the Big Deal? And to Who?
Last time I was prattling on (as I’m wont to do) about my recurring theme of Canadian identity in Canadian movies and TV (and, honestly, if I took a little more time with these posts, I’d probably come up with … Continue reading
Saving Hope, Continuum, The Listener and…Kimonos: what’s in a (mis)pronunciation among friends, eh?
As I’m sure regular readers of this blog know — I like to set myself up as a bit of a (mild) agitator. And yes — even I pause at that phrase “regular readers”. But people do apparently read this … Continue reading
The “King” is dead…and the right way to end a cancelled TV series
I’ve written more than once about the Canadian TV mystery-drama, King — citing it as, in my opinion, one of the best shows currently on TV. Not, mind you, simply, one of the best Canadian shows, but one of the … Continue reading
The War of 1812 — the war everybody “won”!
Recently there has been a lot of notice commemorating the North American War of 1812. And though a historical conflict might seem an odd topic for a blog whose self-proclaimed idiom is pop culture, it’s an interesting thing to reflect … Continue reading
Familiar – short form suburban horror
A little while back I received an e-mail from a producer, Zach Green, who’d made a short Canadian horror film with writer/director Richard Powell called Familiar — and he sent me a link to where it could be viewed … Continue reading
Recommending Ray Bradbury — sort of
It’s a funny ol’ world. I was listening to the radio the other day, when the DJ/host took a moment to comment on the passing of legendary American science fiction and fantasy/horror writer, Ray Bradbury. She mentioned that Bradbury was … Continue reading
In Praise of the Queen (or the Gifflesnorff!)
This blog is primarily about pop culture — often about Canadian movies & TV, though with the intent (only occasionally acted upon so far) of broadening out to cover other things, like radio dramas, and non-Canadian movies & TV. So … Continue reading
