About Me…
I sometimes go by the handle of D.K. Latta and I'm a Canadian sometimes fiction writer and self-appointed pop commentator who has opined about Canadian film & TV (at "The Great Canadian Guide to the Movies & TV"...and elsewhere), comic books/graphic novels (at "The Masked Bookwyrm's Graphic Novel Reviews"...and elsewhere) and storytelling in general (with some essays at the archived Pulp & Dagger Fiction) and am now turning my astute and canny observations (read: incessant blathering) toward a Blog that will, variously, touch on these topics...and more. Oooh...and I also love radio drama!Categories
Quote du Jour…ish
"I object to you. I object to intellect without discipline. I object to power without constructive purpose." ~ Spock, "Star Trek: The Squire of Gothos"-

The Secret World of…Canadianisms
I’ll sometimes start drafting blog posts…that then start me down a different path…which then open up a new idea. So this post kind of arose out of a couple of pieces I’m working on, but I decided to post this … Continue reading

Bad Reviews – get over it
I was originally going to begin this post (about the way artists — and their fans — react sometimes vituperatively to negative reviews) by saying it was apropos of nothing much. Just a subject that had been bubbling in my … Continue reading

When Good Shows Go Bad (Sort of) — King and musings on the pitfalls of writing episodic TV
Because I can be a slow writer — often drafting a post, then sitting on it for a bit so I can go over it again — that gap between when I set out to write something and the time … Continue reading
Ten Golden Rules for Making Better Canadian Movies
In the American film All That Jazz, Roy Scheider plays a dance choreographer who, at one point, has promoted his dancer girl friend beyond her skill/talent level. As a result, he impatiently berates and humiliates her every time she stumbles. … Continue reading

Films or Filmmakers — where does the problem lie?
Why do Canadian movies have so much trouble finding success? Particularly at the box office, but even critically? Canada, after all, is a G7 nation — one of the richest in the world. So although the budgets for Canadian … Continue reading

Yeah, But… (The Rozema Manifesto)
I was doing a bit of Googling to check a couple of facts and ideas for my next post and I came upon this recent Globe and Mail piece by filmmaker Patricia Rozema that was billed as a “manifesto” for … Continue reading
The “Do What I Say, Not What I Do” School of Commentary
AMUSING POST-SCRIPT DEPARTMENT (a follow-up to my previous post): Yoni Goldstein’s piece about how terrible ALL Canadian TV is did receive a few comments on the Huffington Post – Canada site — strongly disagreeing with him. This then led to … Continue reading

Hating Canadian TV — it’s fun, easy, and requires no rational thought
So I was idly perusing a few editorials at the conservative website, Huffington Post – Canada, when… Sorry…what’s that you say? Isn’t Huffington Post considered a liberal website? you ask. No, no, you’re thinking of the American Huffington Post. Some … Continue reading

Cutting the CBC…
In the recent government budget that was announced, the budget for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has been cut by a few million over the next few years (10 percent over three years…whatever that means). I wasn’t necessarily going to … Continue reading

Yeah, I’m Writing About “King”…Again.
I’ve written a time or two before about the Canadian TV series King — here, and a bit here, and here — so I wasn’t sure if there was any point in revisiting the topic. But, y’know, there are always those … Continue reading
